Summer 2022; one of the most attractive seasons of the year is nearly there. And most of the population prepares their suitcases to travel and discover new places. In fact, 81% plan to travel this summer, of which nearly 51% intend to fly on a plane.
However, whether and how consumers will travel in the short term will fluctuate, contingent upon safety concerns, travel restrictions, and government policies.
Although it may seem to be a bold claim, Expedia Group Chief Executive Officer Peter Kern believes that 2023 will be the year that we stop predicting a travel recovery and actually start enjoying it. But this is not all: he also forecasts that before then, “Summer 2022 will be the busiest travel season ever”.
And why is that? Because Europe is indeed expected to relax restrictions, mask mandates are falling even in liberal U.S. states, and borders are reopening in parts of the world such as Australia. Pandemic-era travel barriers are starting to recede.
But Kern isn’t the only one who claims that this summer will be the busiest travel season. Actually, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) updated its economic modeling with predictions that U.S. travel and tourism would exceed pre-pandemic levels by 6.2%, accounting for almost $2 trillion in U.S. gross domestic product. And in Europe, the council’s data shows that summer 2022 bookings have already surpassed 2021 levels by at least 80%.
“Travel is no longer just about ‘going somewhere,’” said Christie Hudson, a senior public relations manager for Expedia. “Coming out of such a long period of constraints and limitations, 2022 will be the year we wring every bit of richness and meaning out of our experiences.”
